Calm for worry, grief and hardship
1Refuge from worry and grief
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ، وَالْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ، وَالْبُخْلِ وَالْجُبْنِ، وَضَلَعِ الدَّيْنِ وَغَلَبَةِ الرِّجَالِ
Allāhumma innī a'ūdhu bika minal-hammi wal-ḥazan, wal-'ajzi wal-kasal, wal-bukhli wal-jubn, wa ḍala'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijāl.
O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from helplessness and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, from the weight of debt and from being overpowered by others.
The story
Anas ibn Malik, who served the Prophet ﷺ, said he would often hear him saying this.

2The du'a of distress
لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْعَظِيمُ الْحَلِيمُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَرَبُّ الْأَرْضِ وَرَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْكَرِيمِ
Lā ilāha illallāhul-'Aẓīmul-Ḥalīm, lā ilāha illallāhu Rabbul-'Arshil-'Aẓīm, lā ilāha illallāhu Rabbus-samāwāti wa Rabbul-arḍi wa Rabbul-'Arshil-Karīm.
There is no god but Allah, the Mighty, the Forbearing. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the Mighty Throne. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth and Lord of the Noble Throne.
The story
Ibn 'Abbas reported that the Prophet ﷺ would say this at times of distress.

3The du'a of Yunus
لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ
Lā ilāha illā anta subḥānaka innī kuntu minaẓ-ẓālimīn.
There is no god but You. Glory be to You; I have certainly been among the wrongdoers.
The story
Yunus عليه السلام called out with this from the belly of the whale. The Prophet ﷺ said no Muslim supplicates with it for anything except that Allah answers him (Tirmidhi 3505, graded sahih by al-Albani).

4O Ever-Living, O Sustainer
يَا حَيُّ يَا قَيُّومُ بِرَحْمَتِكَ أَسْتَغِيثُ
Yā Ḥayyu yā Qayyūm, bi-raḥmatika astaghīth.
O Ever-Living, O Sustainer of all, by Your mercy I seek relief.
The story
Anas ibn Malik reported that whenever a matter distressed the Prophet ﷺ, he would say this.

5Expand my chest
رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي وَيَسِّرْ لِي أَمْرِي
Rabbish-raḥ lī ṣadrī, wa yassir lī amrī.
My Lord, expand my chest for me, and make my task easy for me.
The story
Musa عليه السلام asked this when he was commanded to go to Pharaoh. For anyone facing something daunting.
Qur'an 20:25–26
6Allah is sufficient for us
حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ
Ḥasbunallāhu wa ni'mal-wakīl.
Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.
The story
Ibn 'Abbas said Ibrahim عليه السلام said it when thrown into the fire, and Muhammad ﷺ said it when told that people had gathered against them.

7The du'a of the young men of the cave
رَبَّنَا آتِنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحْمَةً وَهَيِّئْ لَنَا مِنْ أَمْرِنَا رَشَدًا
Rabbanā ātinā mil-ladunka raḥmatan wa hayyi' lanā min amrinā rashadā.
Our Lord, grant us mercy from Yourself, and guide us rightly in our affair.
The story
Said by the young believers as they took refuge in the cave. For when you don't know what to do next.
